I found this very good, yet I have seen people rate it unfavourably against the Mercy Thompson series. I am sorry to see that, as the two story lines should not be compared. They are completely different fish. If you just go into the book looking for a great story, you won't be disappointed. Ms. Briggs writes with depth and nuance that once again takes one into the story. Raven Shadow The Raven Duology Book 1 Patricia Briggs 9780441011872 Books Reviews
Very good fantasy novel. The world was well constructed, with thought and creativity. The "evil" was pretty standard stuff, but the good guys model was different. The heros we're middle age parents. I am really looking forward to reading book 2.
A good read that will leave you wanting to listen to more. I bought this book in audible format and enjoyed listening to it. The story was entertaining and allowed me to "Read" a story while doing my hobbies.
The book is a mix of fantasy because of the element of magic, mystery because of a character that goes missing, adventure to find the missing character, and romance. The ingredients of the book mix together into a tasty story.
Patricia Briggs is an excellent writer and this book is another example of her wonderful story telling. The characters are complex and believable, the world is interesting and the plot is both heartbreaking and exciting. There are no down sides to this book. Seriously, just by it, or buy the audio book. I plan on buying both.
I just finished reading this today; I started it a couple of days ago and couldn't put it down. Briggs has created a wonderful world peopled with well-rounded, absorbing and resourceful characters, who are believable without being overpowered. She has developed a very believable and detailed backstory for her world, but manages to skillfully work it into her narrative without "info-dumping." Even though there are scenes of characters explaining things to other characters, I never got the feeling the plot was being slowed down or derailed. Through strong descriptive skills, she manages to bring a feeling of mystery and magic to her world. I *loved* that the protagonists were a married couple with some history to them and a real depth of emotion, instead of the far-too-common teenager-with-sword of a hundred derivative "Hero's Journey"-type stories. Tier's winning over the Passerines was well-done, as was Seraph's gaining control of the Renegade Traveler clan. Briggs also has a strong sense of what does *not* need to be shown in a novel to keep the narrative moving, often skipping briskly over scenes of characters filling each other in on things that the reader already knows and moving on to new plot material.
I did have a few issues with the book, though these were minor. I thought Rederni felt like a much more fleshed-out location than the imperial palace, although that may have been because we saw the palace mostly through Tier's eyes and he spent much of that a prisoner. I would have liked to be shown how Seraph managed to get into the chambers of the Secret Path; it felt a little too convenient that she just managed to show up there at close to the right time. In the same vein, I would have liked to see more of Seraph's travels with the Traveler clan after she won them to her cause. There were a few other minor quibbles, but nothing to interfere seriously with my enjoyment of a solid read.
This was fun to read, so much so that I am getting the next one in the series! I like all of this author's work. She seems very able to make different believable alternate realities and different characters for each one. This is a completely different world than any of the other books I have read from her so far.
The characters are interesting and you grow to understand them and like them (OK there are a few you get to not like much as well!)as the book progresses. There is some romance, life and death threats, battles, magic and adventures all in one book.
Yes, it is a series - at least 2 books that I know of anyway - however the first book is one complete story in itself. She doesn't leave you totally hanging in the middle of some crisis or battle. There is an end. Yep, you know something else is coming along in the next book, but it is not done in a way that is incredibly frustrating like so many other stories are that end the book in the middle of the story! My feeling is I read for enjoyment and I don't want to feel frustrated when I get to the 'end' because of some marketing ploy. So I was VERY happy with this book, which you can set down when you are done and feel satisfied. Of course it also leaves you feeling curious about what will happen to them next as well! That is why I am ordering the next book.
Tier is an ex-soldier returning home after the war. He encounters a village where a man has just been burned to death and his sister Seraph is being sold to the highest bidder. Tier outbids everyone to save her. They return to Tier's home where they marry and build a life for themselves. All goes well until Tier is abducted. Seraph and her two sons will go to great lengths to find him. A great story unfolds through the talented writing of Patricia Briggs.
Raven's Shadow is about the life of Seraph whose magic comes to her naturally as part of her ancestral heritage. She is a daunting lady whose background is far different from the people among whom she lives. Her race is known as Travelers who don't settle down but which has a geas on them to travel and help people wherever they are. Raven is her title. Seraph finds herself alone in the world but willingly goes to live with Tier who she eventually marries. They live on a farm they have literally dug out of wild land and have 3 children who have innate talents which work along with Seraph's like puzzle pieces to make a bigger magic talent together. Their tribulations as they travel to complete a duty make for great reading and the story is well crafted. The companion book, Raven's Strike, is worth reading as well.
I found this very good, yet I have seen people rate it unfavourably against the Mercy Thompson series. I am sorry to see that, as the two story lines should not be compared. They are completely different fish. If you just go into the book looking for a great story, you won't be disappointed.
