CAUTION: it is important to have read "THE LADY AND THE LAIRD" before venturing into this "second Chapter". This book actually starts some time into the the relationship between the hero and heroine and therefore many of the little hints and hero-heroine interactions may not have the full impact or make as much sense without that first knowledge. Our Heroine is the middle daughter, a young, childless widow, who has the responsibility of carrying her late husbands philanthropic wishes. Her life is complicated by two issues; the first was that her husband had been her best friend, a knight in shining armor who married her when she became promised to a totally unacceptable Lord old enough to be her father: and had been "always a friend-never a lover". His absence from her life leaves her with bouts of sever melancholy. The second issue is that she knows a secret she cannot share with anyone except her father-in-law, and she is being threatened by her father-in-law's heir. Enter our hero, who is manipulated by said father-in-law to become bethrothed to our heroine in order to protect her from the heir... About 3/4 of the way through the book, a character enters the story and if one is familiar with Ms Cornick's style, you know he is a very bad guy, but how and why is the question left until the very end of the book. This type of story line is not one of my favorites, I sorta like to have all the general relevant facts known at the beginning so I can concentrate on how the characters work through the conflicts, and and play up the mutual commonalities of their personalities. But I do appreciate ending a story with the thought- "WOW, I sure didn't get that one for a long time, great surprise ending!" Also, pay attention to Lucas Black's cameo role, more to come later...Tags : One Night with the Laird [Nicola Cornick] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A Fatal Attraction!
Fashionable society widow Lady Mairi MacLeod cannot understand the dark passion that binds her to Jack Rutherford. One Night with the Laird Nicola Cornick 9780373777907 Books Reviews
This book was excellent with two main characters who were both hurt and traumatized; unable to love freely. This is a real and well detailed book that will leave you rooting fiercely for Jack and Mairi.
The first few chapters made me wonder if I had made a mistake in ordering the book. But it started to come together and the story line turned out to be very interesting.
I liked this book but seems the story just kept going an going wasn't in my opinion one of her better books the first book was way better it' a set of 3 books
Nicola Cornick hit it out of the park for me again! Her work is always fun, and this book is a lot of fun. I loved watching one night turn into true love....I can't wait for book three...
This was a wonderful love story and one of my favorite books by this author. The characters and storyline were so well written and the love story with both the hero and heroine was exciting and beautiful. Definitely a five star rating for the story and author.
I really enjoyed this book.
Mairi and Jack are great flawed characters - they each have their own demons and are both very private people who don't trust easily
Watching them fall In love was very entertaining - especially since neither of them wanted to be in love or get married.
I thought this book was quite a bit more steamy than other books I have read by Ms. Cornick - but that was fine by me - the hotter the better!!
I thought the end of the book was a bit abrupt and things wrapped up too quickly and neatly to be believable - but all in all it was a very good read.
I am looking forward to the next book about Lucas and Christina
What I love about Ms. Cornick's writing is that she had the ability to pull you into the story from the very beginning and never in the book does she lose your interest. Her settings are rich in detail taking you back to another era. Her characters come to life and you feel the emotions they go through both joy and gut wrenching agony. She also brings back characters you fell in love with from the first book and introduces you to the new character from the next book. The hardest part is that after falling in love with Robert and Lucy in the first book and Jack and Mairi in this book you will be hard pressed to decide which love story you enjoyed the most. Well written, great plot with twists you don't see coming, definite must read. I look forward to the next book, my only regret is that I will have to wait 6 months.
