Undertow is considerably shorter than other Norris titles I've read--more novella than novel--but its themes are similar to The Rich Mrs. Burgoyne and Beauty's Daughter. Norris liked to focus on a woman's role in society, coming down very much on the side of raising children and keeping a home. Undertow follows the domestic life of two young people who get married on very little but slowly move up in the world. Along the way, though, they lose sight of what is important, worrying too much about keeping up with their neighbors and following fashion. I didn't enjoy this shorter story as much as I have Norris's longer novels--there was a sense of doom hanging over the entire narrative as it became clear just what the undertow was--but I do enjoy Norris's writing and am looking forward to more of her titles.Product details

Kathleen is a wonderful author. Had been looking for Undertow for years. So thrilled to find it here. Thank you!
I know that the are dated but, they still are good stories written by an author of her times. My mother always called them my "bread & jam" books.
A sweet story of a lovely young couple and their struggles to find a life best suited for their family. A real "Keeping Up With The Jones" ending.
This book could be written about the present day as it is mainly about 'keeping up with the Jones.' Although this book is about an earlier time the lesson it teaches is very current.
