Initially I was skeptical about the plot but must admit, this was a very good book. It wasn't over done but kept my attention. I think what I like most is that it is a good standalone book...no trilogy.

I'll definitely read more from this young author.

This was a beautifully written allegory of hope, redemption, and Christ' love for us! I would recommend this for both Christians and other readers!
When I first started reading this one, I had a mild panic attack, because the first chapter reminded me so much of The Field. They are two very different stories, but they both speak to themes of redemption and spiritual warfare, and portray similar archetypes.

Adams builds a vivid world, and you won't just feel her story emotionally, but physically as well.
This book is allegorical fantasy at its finest. Gillian does an amazing job weaving the story together, from a character's motives and desires to breathtaking and suspenseful action sequences...without making the story confusing or hard to understand. The allegory shines through beautifully, the characters are well portrayed, and even the motives of the evil Serpent are clearly explained. I would definitely recommend this book and her other published book, also available from , titled 'Orphan's Song,' to everyone. My only issue with the book is that it is over all too quickly; I want it to be longer so that I can enjoy the story more )
Ad Majoram Dei Gloriam....For the greater glory of God! The author has created a work that reminds me of C. S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", yet for all of that, this book definitely is the author's own work. We all have doubts, fears and questions about God, but, He is merciful and forgives us no matter how for we stray. This book reminds me of His mercy. Thank you Ms. Adams for following His plan for your life.
My only disappointment was that it wasn't longer! Gillian packs a wonderful allegory into a very quick story--more like a novella than a novel--and the comparisons and metaphors are so strong and so beautiful that I could keep reading on and on! The descriptions of the settings are so strong that I can practically taste and smell them, and the characters are wonderful examples of their real-world counterparts. An excellent tale, and a thought-provoking message!

The imagery in Out of Darkness Rising was my favorite part. I knew as soon as I read the first words that this was going to be a captivating story I would love and share with others.

Gillian weaves a magnificent allegory that covers the fall and the redemption of our story with a style of her own that is lucid, unique, powerful, and elegant. Her prose is engaging and breath-taking but never did it distract me from the overall epic tale of a traitorous and murderous knight, a young girl striving to survive in a dark world, and a compassionate and loving prince who seeks to rescue his people.

I finished Out of Darkness Rising on Easter and it made the significant day more impactful to me. Both Jesus' story and Out of Darkness Rising reverberated with me over the course of several weeks. It touched my soul and, I'll admit it, I did shed a few tears. It was hard to sit down and write a review because no amount of my own feeble words could describe the vast awesomeness of this book.

I think the one thing that really hit me about this book is the knowledge that we cannot save ourselves from our sin. It is His job and His work alone to do - to save us - because He loves us.

Thank you, Gillian, for touching my heart with this beautiful allegorical Christian fantasy novella. I can't wait to see what you spin next.

bad I know it says it's a novella but it was just TOO SHORT! I would've loved to have see Gillian expand the main character's (Marya) story further, creating more suspense and character development.

notes I highly recommend reading it during the time of Lent. It was very inspirational during that time of reflecting on the Lord's mercy, grace, and love.
This is allegorical Christian fantasy writing at its best. Gillian Bronte Adams is a true artist with a pen (aka keyboard). Using her well crafted skills, she takes the reader to a kingdom where treachery and betrayal has reached the very doors of the King from a once loyal and trusted soldier. After a fierce sword fight, the prince is victorious against the traitor. Punishment is exacted; the traitor is transformed into heinous serpent and banished to the Loch. And so begins the story of a King's unending love for his people, a promise made, and a people who have too long breathed the foul air of the serpent. The pace keeps moving, never getting bogged down. Word descriptions are clear and image producing. This story is a wonderful allegory of the fall of man, the promise of a redeemer, the redemption of man by Christ, and the Resurrection. Highly recommend!
