The first time I encountered this story was seeing the Disney movie in the theater while in junior high. Then I saw the book in the library and tried to check it out. Being just 13, I wasn’t old enough to check out adult books, but the librarian knew me and made an exception. I was expecting the book to be just like the movie, but it wasn’t - it was so much better! And so began my introduction to Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote. When a new book came out, the library would hold a copy for me and call my mom to let me know. This is still one of my favorites, so I was thrilled to see them re-released in Kindle format. I’m laid up following shoulder surgery and dived right in. I was a little afraid it would feel dated, but no fears. It is certainly vintage and reflects the social mores of the time, especially with regard to dress, but the story stands on its own and was as fun to read now (for the 3rd time) as it was in the late 60s when I first read it. Mary Stewart’s books shine because they are very well-written stories about well-defined characters. I strongly recommend this book and pretty much any other book by Stewart.

Mary Stewart's mysteries always surprise with a twist. Of course, this is only the 3rd one I've read but I enjoy her suspense, her style. I gave it 4 stars because it got a bit heavy on detail of things that weren't critical to the development of the plot. I enjoyed it though and have recommended it to other readers. It is a clean mystery with a bit of a love story.
A wonderful story, revolving around a lovely tale of the beings who could spin the light of the moon into a thread until it was gone and pay it out until it was a full moon again Set on the Greek island of Crete --this story was made into a Disney movie starring young Haley Mills! I have both read the book and seen the movie several times and thoroughly enjoyed them!
I first read rhis book when i was 14. Hate to admit that was over 40 years ago. I have been anxiously awaiting its release on kindle. I have read it over 30 times. It's an awesome story with action, adventure and romance. It never gets old!
Like many others, I read this first as a young 'tween', and remember re-reading it many times. I believe it was my favorite Mary Stewart, one of the first 'romantic suspense' authors that was popular, particularly since there was more emphasis on the suspense unlike Georgette Heyer, which I tired of quickly. Rereading this on my was a true pleasure - Mary Stewart was extremely talented at descriptions and she didn't hesitate to use 'big' words.

I enjoyed it as much this time around as the first ten times I read this book.
Mary Stewart's stories are always tight-knit, and while some consider them romances and others as mysteries, they are always absorbing and coherent stories of ordinary people caught up in unexpected events. The same thorough background knowledge and possibilities-based-in-facts that she brings to her Merlin/Crystal Cave trilogy were born in these earlier books. Even the decades these stories are set in becomes mostly unnoticeable because of the integral plots. Try one - and enjoy!
After seeing "The Moon-Spinners" movie featuring Hayley Mills, I finally decided to read the book. The book is completely different than the movie! Virtually, the only thing the book has in common with the movie is the character names and the setting. I definitely prefer the book to the movie, although I also enjoy the movie.

The book is written from the perspective of young Nicola Ferris, a capable English woman who is visiting from Athens. While exploring the secluded mountains of Agios Georgios, she has a close encounter with a Greek (and his knife). As it turns out, Lambis (the Greek) is sheltering handsome Mark Langely, an English tourist who received a bullet wound for reasons unknown to Nicola...

The duo immediately arouse Nicola's suspicions and as a result, she decides to do some sleuthing of her own while staying in the village's newly opened hotel. Quaint Agios Georgios is unaccustomed to prying visitors, consequently Nicola finds herself making more enemies than friends.

P.S. I would recommend reading the book before watching the movie, as the movie soon reveals plot twists from the latter part of the book.
It must have been about 40 years ago that I first discovered Mary Stewart. At that time I read everything by her that I could get my hands on. I'm happy to see that a new generation is discovering her also. I reread The Moon-Spinners as part of an Enchanted Mega-Buddy Read in a group that I belong to in Goodreads. It was fun comparing notes and having one of the other readers pick up some significant detail that you missed. I can honestly say that a good time was had by all.
For me it was a pleasurable reread of an old friend. I remembered almost nothing from the first read 40 years ago. The heroine of the story was an English girl named Nicola. See works in a minor capacity at the British Embassy in Athens. She and her cousin Frances agree to meet for a holiday in a small town on the Isle of Crete.
You can tell that this was written in a kinder, gentler time because I can't imagine a 22 year old girl today would be safe wondering around on Crete all alone.
Nicola decides to take a trek into the mountains before heading for the small town of Athos Georgios where her cousin will be joining her in a few days. Mary Stewart paints a glorious picture of the scenery. Her words bring out the beauty of Crete.
While on her wondering through the countryside, she stumbles across a wounded man and his companion with a strange story to tell. She helps the wounded man, Mark, a fellow Englishman, while he tells her how he ended up with the bullet hole. Suddenly Crete doesn't seem that safe after all and the tiny town where she and her cousin will be staying suddenly seems dangerous.
That is as far as I go into the story without divulging the rest of the story which the reader needs to discover for themselves. This book is fascinating, exciting and so worth reading. Enjoy!!!
