Love in The Roaring Twenties needs more than a flirtation act. Violet Williams knows. Secretly in love with Danny O’Brien, her co-star in Vaudeville, the ecstasy of romance competes with the excitement of an opening night at The Palace.

Can she ever expect more out of their relationship? Will he ever face his true feelings for her? Deep and abiding love takes the spotlight against a colorful backstage backdrop that pulsates with the thrill of theater and joy of the Jazz Age.

Acclaimed by readers, author Debra L. Davis’ exquisitely crafted tale of passion in the 1920s reverberates with a timelessness that transcends eras.

Flirtation Act The Story of a Boy a Girl and Vaudeville A Novel edition by Debra L Davis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Wonderful read! This story transports us back to the bygone era of vaudeville and the 1920's. The characters are likeable and well-developed. The author does an amazing job of describing the venues and locales that are visited in the book, so you feel as though you are there in person! Bravo to Ms. Davis on creating a very enjoyable, well-written novel. Hopefully this is the first of many more to come!!!
Well-written story! The author uses many vivid era-specific details throughout the book to take the reader back in time to the wistful 1920s, full of all the hope and sentiment of a simpler yet-no-less-colorful age of show business. Highly recommend for anyone who likes a romantic tale set in a rich historical background.
Talented writer, Debra Davis, appears to have lived during the fabulous times she describes so beautifully.
Having had a mother very much like the vivacious Violet, I sang, danced and cried my way through the book as
though I were right there, savouring all the sounds, sights and smells of those fabulous days gone by.
Debra's research sets us in the "day" as we await the next event in Danny and Vi's love story. I checked her facts;
Debra's historical facts are right on, even to the location of famous department stores!
Having grown up in New York in the thirties, forties, I cheer Debra for her charming, well researched book.
Let's have more!

This rich, romantic tale takes the reader back to the 1920s vaudeville era when stage headliners included Bessie Smith, Burns and Allen, W. C. Fields, Smith and Dale, Harry Houdini, Ed Wynn, and Clayton, Jackson, and Durante. But the focus is on O’Brien and Williams, who fall in love while creating a successful vaudeville act in the face of mounting personal adversities. The compelling story line is weaved in a manner that combines history with fiction to create a magical atmosphere that grabs the reader and won’t let go, with the reader being immediately transported back in time and rooting for O’Brien and Williams from beginning to end. The author’s use of the simple vaudeville era backdrop is most refreshing and appreciated, considering today’s over-the-top, in-your-face, must-see-every-detail style of entertainment. Do yourself a favor and read all about O’Brien and Williams - you won’t be disappointed. My only hope is that Flirtation Act is the first act of a multi-act play and will be followed up with additional offerings. Bravo to Debra L. Davis for this wonderful novel!
So says the vaudeville headliner Danny O’Brien as he prepares to introduce his fledgling partner (and budding muse) Violet Williams to the intricate art of juggling beanbags. The juggling is merely a bit of business, to be inserted somewhere in their developing routine, but there is no doubt in Violet’s mind—or in ours by this time—that what they are doing is serious business indeed.

The blossoming romance between the two holds our interest as we watch them assemble a durable sketch comedy for the vaudeville stage of the mid-1920s. But the most palpable presence in the book, a character in its own right, is “the life,” the incredibly self-disciplined world of the singers, dancers, burlesque artists and comedians whose nomadic existence offered them a home that was everywhere and nowhere. Debra Davis reveals a deep sympathy for the lure of the performing life, with its innumerable joys and its inevitable sorrows.

Instead of gazing back at that world through today’s eyes, Davis puts us inside it. Her style, sometimes breathless, always hopeful, befits the decade when every settled thing seemed on the cusp of change. The romance between Violet and Danny unfolds in words that the lovers themselves might have used to describe it.

As to the serious business of clowning, Davis knows what she is about. Danny’s brief exchange with Mrs. Main, the no-nonsense proprietor of a boarding house in Buffalo, will remind some readers of another Main, the Marjorie who cracked wise as Ma Kettle, and others of W.C. Fields’s formidable landlady in the 1934 film THE OLD FASHIONED WAY. Throughout the novel, moreover, Davis deposits crumbs of 1920s wisdom that educate as well as amuse, if we would only take the time to gather them. My favorites how to achieve beaded lashes; how to make chicken soup (a charmingly concise recipe); and how to keep ants from crawling over you as you sleep.
A historical fiction, rom com, quick read!
This is not only a wonderful story, but it also takes us back to the days of Vaudeville, showing it what it was like from the inside. Bravo, author Debra Davis!
