This book was definitely meant for the type of kid/adult who enjoys the Series of Unfortunate Events. The author intrusions were very similar... and equally brilliant. It was an incredibly fun book to read.

Now, for my advice as a parent...

Some reviews have noted that the book is scary. While the intensity was definitely heightened at the end, I think they're all referring to the scene very reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom--the human sacrifice scene and the implication that there will also be cannibalism in some form. It all takes place in front of a cult group in a pyramid. (So, it's very like that Indiana Jones scene--minus the lava, but there is a giant bonfire.) While the child due to be killed is not one of the main kids and is ultimately saved, there have been previous missing kids who weren't so lucky. It's not graphic per se. The villain describes what he is going to do and makes preparations to do it. In a previous scene, there is a character who drinks something that possibly contains blood and there are implications that the "Fountain of Youth" concoctions they're all drinking contain some essence of previously killed victims... though it's really glossed over and not focused on.

The main characters in this are eleven years old, but kids generally read up so you'd expect kids aged 8-11 to be interested. On the other hand, how do you know your child has reached that crucial "I'm okay with human sacrifice and implied cannibalism" stage? I have a nine and a ten year old, and I'm not entirely sure this wouldn't give my ten year old nightmares. She's a bit more sensitive.

I still whole-heartedly recommend it. It was pure genius from beginning to end, but sensitive kids or kids who visualize far beyond the book's details might want to wait until they're older.

I've been reading The Secret Series with my son and this review refers to the series as a whole. I have to admit, I wasn't sure about this book at first. The whole "meta fiction" style can really hit or miss, and since we'd recently read and enjoyed A Series of Unfortunate Events I was skeptical. Was The Name of This Book Is Secret just a rip off? It's not just a rip off. There's some really nice writing in PB's books, and while I can grow weary of meta elements, they are handled well here, are largely used to enhance the stories, and never last for long. The narrator starts with self-consciousness, but quickly disappears into the narrative, so the story completely upstages him until he emerges again to wax poetic about chocolate. His asides are often quite amusing and clever. My son and I also read all of the Harry Potter books together, and truly, PB's series is far more original, and his writing is far better. The "read-aloud" test is a difficult one, and the Harry Potter books foundered in this area far more often than The Secret Series. There are also all sorts of cool puzzles to solve in the context of the stories and interesting information hidden in fun little packages called footnotes. What's more, The Secret Series handles magic in a very refreshing way. It's perfect for the young, clever reader.
My son is seven. He devoured the Harry Potter books, but I had him stop after book five. At that point, I was in a real quandry. I needed a book series that would have an age appropriate story line yet challenge him with vocabulary and reading comprehension without being too taxing. The Secret Series was the perfect solution for my young voracious reader.

This book will appeal to both boys and girls as there are two main characters of each gender. Plus, the girl isn't overly "girly", so she doesn't turn my son off.

The entire series of books has mystery, intrigue, and loads of humor. However, I do recommend starting with book one and reading the subsequent books sequentially.
This book is a part of the Secret series. The writer is very funny and offers a little lot of comedy along with a serious storyline. I read this book to my 9 year old and he loved it. The story is about two kids that find themselves in the middle of a mysterious situation. They have to find a solution on their own. Very interesting story that kept you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend this series of books.
I downloaded the Secret series after reading reviews on . I am an adult over 30 years old and love books such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Kane Chronicles. I was looking for a similar series to read on a vacation for mindless fun and fantasy. The secret series is amazing, I could not put the books down and read all of them within a few days. They are funny, the characters are absolutely adorable, and since the writer is writing for children, you can overlook things that you normally would not for adult books. The books had their fun moments and I love how the friendship between the three lead characters develops, the books are also a good role model because they follow a similar thought as Percy Jackson series that "different" does not mean "bad", take that all the "mean girls" and "bullies" at school.
When I have children, this is on their reading list. Highly recommend for kids and adults like me who like such books.
